Chapter Twelve

Nowhere To Go

Robbie the ogre and Darcy the dryad both yelled in horror and backpedaled when Hal changed.

He found himself lying on his belly. He tried to bring his hand in front of his face but couldn’t seem to reach. In fact, his vision was awful, like he had gunk in his eyes. He twisted around, wriggling to see what—

Ugh.

He glimpsed the thick tail end of whatever he was. Dry, rough skin, a mottled dark-brown and black color . . . He was some kind of lizard, probably bigger than Fenton. Much bigger than Fenton, despite his stubby tail.

I need water, he thought.

The compulsion to dive into a river hit him hard. But he’d have to walk all the way down the precarious cliff steps first, and that would be a clumsy affair in his current guise. He felt a moment of panic as the urge took hold . . .

“Relax,” Hanzaki said. “I can feel your stress building. We are amphibious. We may yearn for the cold, fresh water of the streams, but we are safe here.”

Hal wanted to ask what he was, but he couldn’t form the words to speak out loud. And she couldn’t hear his thoughts. So he had to wait there, feeling huge and disgusting and ugly. At least dragons were magnificent. He was fairly certain that Hanzaki, whatever she was, lacked in the beauty department.

Darcy edged forward. “Hal? Are you in there?”

She remained in dryad form, fully in control. Hal wished he could say the same. He was but a mind in a foreign body. Although . . . he’d managed to wriggle around earlier, something he’d wished to do, not Hanzaki. Maybe he had control after all.

He experimented by taking a few paces toward Darcy. It worked—but Hanzaki chose that moment to take over, suddenly dashing forward and causing Darcy to scream and leap away.

The two nearby oni guards guffawed. And in Hal’s head, Hanzaki laughed long and hard. “Look how high she jumps!”

Robbie came stomping closer, fists raised, growling.

Hanzaki eased off at last. “Oh, Hal, we gave her a good scare, did we not? We have lots of small teeth, for we are carnivorous. We are a giant salamander.”

“There’s no ‘we’ about it,” Hal growled.

Hanzaki laughed. “Now, do not be like that.”

Hal suddenly realized she could hear and understand his speech perfectly fine in this, her own form. Not that he wanted to talk to her.

Darcy stood at a distance, wary and wide-eyed. Robbie shuffled over to her and sat as ogres often did, hunched forward with knees drawn up.

“I did not ask to be a salamander, but here we are. I think we are quite majestic, yes? And almost unkillable. A warrior could slice me in two and I would survive. In fact, my name literally means ‘han’ for half and ‘zaki’ for cut, in the ancient language of my people. Shall I attack one of those guards and force him to hack at me with his sword?”

“No!” Hal yelled.

He
